Martina Silva de Gurruchaga (1790 – 1873)
THE MYTH:
She was a bold and active supporter of the patriotic ideals. She formed a fervent platoon of soldiers; with them she advanced to meet General Belgrano, who had already engaged in battle.
The element of surprise and the audacity of the warriors led by such an extraordinary woman proved decisive in the victory in the famous Battle of Salta. Therefore, General Belgrano awarded her the rank of Honorary Captain of the Army.
This fearless lady went beyond the limits imposed to the women of her time. Her commitment and passionate devotion have left us the legacy of invaluable exemplary civic-mindedness.
