The Gaucho Martín Fierro (1872)
THE MYTH
The gaucho was an outsider, whom the urban aristocracy and the bourgeoisie regarded as a wild barbarian. However, he was also admired for his toughness, his remarkable horsemanship and his loyal, wise and libertarian character. This admiration gave birth to the so-called “gauchesca” poetry and to a new romantic figure, that of the gaucho as a mythical figure and, eventually, the archetype of the “essential values of the Argentine spirit.”
The book “The gaucho Martín Fierro” is the perfect means of expression for this character’s unique voice, at a time when he finds himself cornered by progress and the trend of the 1870’s of always looking up towards Europe.
