Manuel Belgrano (1770 -1820)
THE MYTH
He is remembered as the creator of the national flag and one of the most important heroes of the revolutionary army in the wars for the Latin American independence. These are relevant aspects of his personality, but sometimes people fail to also recognise in Belgrano the features of the intellectual, the lawyer, the politician, the economist and the writer.
He was a man who imagined a different country, with social equality and equal opportunities for all its inhabitants. The hero also founded the first newspaper in Buenos Aires, “El Telégrafo Mercantil”, and promoted education and the creation of public schools.
