Tita Merello (1904 – 2002)
THE MYTH
The girl from the slums is an emblematic artist of the national show-business: she is tango and Buenos Aires.
She had a career of over seventy years during which she performed on stage, on screen and on television, and she sang and lived tango like no other woman had done before. She suffered deprivation, experienced unrequited love, and became successful in a world dominated by men, who willy-nilly learned to respect her. She made genteel ladies uncomfortable and mocked with fierce irony the posh pretences of the high society. She triumphed where others used to fail and gained vindication not only for her own sake, but for all the women of the river bank.
