Carlos Gardel (1890 -1935)
THE MYTH:
He was a popular idol who achieved everlasting glory thanks to the beauty of his voice, his quality as tango interpreter and his role of creator of a new way of performing this music.
His humble origins, his ascent based on courage and talent and his tragic death have helped to magnify his legend.
Some intellectuals have disregarded Gardel because they failed to understand that tango and its most prominent interpreter could be the expression of the new popular culture of immigration.
However, no one can deny that the tango singer is a symbol of Buenos Aires and its spirit. Was Gardel who created this character or Buenos Aires which created Gardel? Both theories may prove to be true in this case.
